Del Mar History

Del Mar is yet another gem located along San Diego's northern coast. It is comprised of two square miles of coastal land and has a population of approximately 4500.

As with most beach communities in San Diego, Del Mar's climate remains wonderful all year long, with average temperatures ranging between 64 and 78 degrees. Del Mar features picturesque ocean views, stunning architectural designs and a wonderful downtown area, infused with elegant shops and restaurants.

In 1882, the Southern California Railroad began a new route from San Diego to San Bernardino. Theodore Loop, worked for the railroad, and instantly fell in love with what he claimed "the most attractive place on the entire coast." He and wife, Ella, built a "city of tents" on the beach and Ella called it Del Mar, naming it after a favorite poem entitled, "The Fight on Paseo Del Mar." By 1910, the South Coast Land Company built a hotel, calling it the Stratford Inn.

From that moment on, the hotel and Del Mar, became a focal point for Hollywood stars. Later people like Jimmy Durante, Betty Grable, Lucille Ball & Desi Arnez made Del Mar their home.

Del Mar real estate is so desirable that many homes in development have had waiting lists, with some some selling before they could be constructed. Del Mar property ranges from apartments to condos to million dollar mansions and beach front communities.

The residential area goes beyond the Del Mar city limits into Del Mar Heights, featuring two elementary schools, a commercial center, and the glorious Torrey Pines Reserve.
