About Del Mar, CA 92014
Del Mar, California 92014 is an upscale coastal community in North San Diego County with a small population -- less than 5,000 residents. It is probably best known for its sandy white beaches, the Del Mar Fair held every summer (now known as the San Diego Country Fair), and the Del Mar Through bred Club's summer horse racing season. If you've heard the tune "Where the Surf Meets the Turf," that's Del Mar. Without a doubt, Del Mar is one of the nation's most prestigious seaside communities, with stunning custom-built homes, beautiful sandstone canyons, and whitewater or ocean views from nearly every crook and cranny. Homeowners, renters and visitors alike enjoy clean, sandy beaches, brilliant sunsets, wonderful and romantic restaurants, and exciting events and shopping year round. Below are just a few attractions that make Del Mar a worldwide destination.
The Del Mar Racetrack
The Del Mar race track is what helped make Del Mar what it is today -- a beautiful beach town with great shopping, dining and fun. Managed by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, the Del Mar races bring the usually quiet town to life every summer from late-July through early-September. Tens of thousands of race fans visit the Del Mar Race Track to bet -- or just watch -- their favorite horses and jockeys race to the finish line. It's also a huge social scene, with dozens of fun events and act ivies for 43 days that includes Open Day (also Hat Day), Four O'clock Friday' concerts, Family Fun Days, Reggae & Beer Fest and the world-famous $1 Million Pacific Classic. The Friday concert series has grown big over the years and brings in some very big name bands, such as Jack Johnson, Billy Idol, B-52s, Pinback, Common Sense, Weezer, The English Beat, ZZ Top and many more. Whether you dress up and hang with the classy crowd in the clubhouse, or hang out in your summer casuals with your family and friends in the infield, the Del Mar Races is a must-see event. And, if you're lucky enough to live in Del Mar, it's a wonderful addition to an already long list of summer fun.
The Plaza at Del Mar
The Del Mar Plaza is at the heart of Del Mar Village -- right smack in the middle of everything. The plaza is just a short walk from Del Mar beaches, the racetrack, several parks and some of Southern California's most luxurious homes. Del Mar Plaza is a beautifully-designed town center with a collection of more than 30 restaurants, boutiques and other services all closely located in a European-type marketplace. You'll find unique clothing and apparel, fine art, jewelry, and ocean view fine dining -- Mexican, Italian, Sushi, Californian -- and as of July 2010, a new hamburger joint. There's also a wine and cigar bar at the top level, and beautiful view from nearly every spot. Plus there's a marketplace (especially handy for Del Mar locals who can walk or bike there).
Seagrove Park
Seagrove Park is at the end of 15th Street in Del Mar Village, about two blocks west of Del Mar Plaza. It is on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean and offers large grassy and treed areas perfect for picnics, reading, relaxing and watching the waves roll in. It also has spectacular sunsets. There are several benches strategically located across the park, such as Zel's Bench, so you don't need to bring your own if you don't want to. It's also a popular place for wedding and other festivities. This popular Del Mar park is as pretty as a postcard.
Powerhouse Park
Powerhouse Park is adjacent to Seagrove Park just a short walk north, just across the street from the historic Del Mar Train Station that closed about 10 years ago. Powerhouse Park is a major North San Diego County landmark and earned its name because of the huge tower that was once part of a power plant in the early 1900s. After the power plant closed, the powerhouse became a night club and later an experimental desalination plant. The City of Del Mar bought the property and surrounding land in 1983, and over the years the has been transformed into a beautiful park with an award-winning community center that is used for community meetings, parties and other events. The park is about 5 acres in size and has a playground and trails at the south end, a large grassy area in the middle, and the community center and beach access at the north end. The huge tower, along with three huge palm trees (known by some as Tres Palms), make it a popular place for picnics, pictures and sunsets. Del Mar's Powerhouse Park offers easy access to beautiful beaches and is a popular swimming, boarding and surfing destination. With freshwater showers, bathrooms, and adequate parking, this community park is a great addition to Del Mar.
Beach Colony
As you leave Powerhouse Park to the north, you enter one of Del Mar's most exclusive communities -- Beach Colony. This neighborhood consists of both modern mansions and beach bungalows. But they all have one thing in common: They're either right on the beach or just a block or two walk. The neighborhood consists of short streets and alleys, and a convenient location to all that Del Mar has to offer.
Torrey Pines State Park
This beautiful 2,000 acre reserve offers hiking, bird watching, rare Torrey Pine trees and other plants, and miles of white sand beaches. It's a popular spot for surfing, swimming, lunch breaks and looking for seashells. The beautiful area has been preserved and brings back a time before Del Mar was developed. Torrey Pines State Reserve is a must-see destination.
Hiking Trails
You can enjoy a gorgeous two-plus mile hike starting at the south end of Powerhouse Park in Del Mar Village. The mostly-dirt trail meanders alongside the railroad tracks and, for the most part, is pretty flat. The ocean view and beautiful homes lead to Torrey Pine State Beach. Many walkers and bikers use these trails daily, but it's never very crowded. You can access Del Mar trails from several other streets but be prepared to off-road your way down some pretty steep slopes. It's easy to stay in good shape in Del Mar -- and if you're the type of person who doesn't like to drive for everything -- you'll love the walker-friendly atmosphere.

Surfing
Del Mar beaches are well-known for surfing -- from beginners to experienced. Some access points include Powerhouse Park, 7th Street, Little Velzy, 10th Street and 25th Street. Del Mar is a popular surf spot because it has good beach access -- and there's lots of fun stuff to do afterwards. Click here to view the Del Mar surf.
